Emily Mercer is a singer-songwriter based in Manchester, UK. With deep vocals, rich chords and punchy hooks her piano-driven songs fuse her Jazz, Indie and Folk influences. Mercer’s songs create drama through soaring melodies, striking harmony and sharp lyricism. Her work has attracted comparisons to artists such as Fiona Apple, Kate Bush, Joan Armatrading and Weyes Blood, as well as to Jazz singers of the past. Her soul-searching lyrics explore self-growth, mental health and what it means to be an artist today.Hailing from the Suffolk countryside, Emily began writing her first songs at the age of eleven on a borrowed classical guitar until the arrival of a donated piano. Though it was battered and untunable, something clicked. After studying music at The University of Leeds, Emily released her debut EP ‘Transparency’ in 2019, hosting a sold out launch show before moving to Manchester. She has since played countless gigs across the country including at Manchester Academy and Sofar Sounds. Mercer also co-runs the female-centric music collective Manchester Women Songwriters to help address the gender imbalance on the scene. In 2020 Emily released stand alone single ‘Gallery’, recording much of the track in isolation. ‘Gallery’ received a number of blog, playlist and radio features, including a full interview segment on BBC radio Suffolk. This year, supported by Arts Council England, Emily is working with a new full band line up to carve a new sound and live act, collaborating with a host of musical talent from the north. Her latest single, 'Maybe Then', developed alongside producer Andrew Raphael was released in April 2022.
